We chatted with Tricia Guild OBE, founder and creative director of Designers Guild about her passion for design and the connection between design and food.
WHERE DOES YOUR PASSION FOR DESIGN COME FROM?
I enjoyed a liberal education, my parents were very creative and so I grew up in a world of creativity. As far as I can remember, color has mesmerized me. It surrounds each one of us in our daily lives: the nature, the cityscape, our clothes, the food we eat - the list is endless.
WHAT MAKES YOU THE MOST FUN AT WORKING WITH DESIGN?
The creativity! For me, the best part is when a home is both comfortable and beautiful. For me it is a pleasure to be surrounded by good design.
ARE THERE ANY TRENDS WE SHOULD BE FOLLOWING IN 2019?
Of course I know which things should be trendy next year. But I think that in the long run it is far more rewarding to follow his instincts and senses.
WHAT ROLE DOES FOOD PLAY IN YOUR LIFE?
Food is very important to me. Nothing is worse than the idea of crouching over a desk or watching TV, completely unaware of what you eat. It is a pity to eat this way, because the food was grown and prepared and should not be taken for granted. Food should always be an occasion.
HOW DOES THE RESTAURANT ENVIRONMENT INFLUENCE THE ENJOYMENT?
I believe that the two are completely intertwined. An inspiring space can raise our spirits and enhance our well-being. When I eat in a place that has been beautifully designed - whether simple or extravagant - I believe that the food was prepared with the same care and attention. I am convinced that everything tastes much better when it looks good. There are the smallest details, the tablecloths and napkins, dishes and glasses as well as the interior decoration, candles and flowers, which can make the evening truly memorable for the guests.
